The standard schnauzer is not a dog for every family, but they are a fabulous dog! They are active dogs who require a fair amount of training and direction. When left to their own devices they WILL find something to get into! They call the standard schnauzer the dog with the human brain, and there is a reason for that!
Standard schnauzers (abbreviated SS) are very intelligent dogs! As such, they will discover puzzles you did not realize were a puzzle. And they will solve them in ways you never dreamed imaginable. Although the SS is a medium sized dog, they pack a lot of power into their size! It is not unheard of for them to jump 4+ feet straight up from a standstill. And when you are purposefully breeding a SS to be an athlete for high level agility you are looking for this level of intense athleticism and intelligence. |
The good news is with proper training and reinforcement this type of dog can still make an excellent pet and family member! When bringing home a SS puppy you MUST be ready to commit to the training and exercise needs of this tiny powerhouse! Once properly trained and integrated into your home, you will never want another breed!
One important note about the SS is they sometimes get lumped into the category of non-shedding or allergy-free. This is not true, and how you care for their coat will determine their shedding. But they are not allergy free (hypoallergenic) dogs.
